Swoop and Sail

a flock of birds dancing in the blue sky
every one turning in unison
entrainment in flight
creating a new entity,
disbanded at nightfall,
but they and it
will return
and you and I will
witness
the dotted sky
a projection
of what we will be
someday.
hold on tight
and we will swoop
and sail,
to where the light
always shines.

The Common Bond

racing towards the arc
where the setting sun is slipping
past the earth.
red, orange and yellow fire
ignite
in a futile attempt
to squelch the night.
we scream
into the now darkening horizon
in the sky’s quiet time
all of us on the surface
begin to make our noise
silence above
cacophony below
but hidden in the purple heaven
there is a sound—
a steady
caw from unseen aviators.
soon
all our sounds intertwine
offered to the night
as
a prayer
of
unanswerable
cries,
a breath pulled in
by day
to be uttered
when the day is ending
our common bond
is simply
all of us
speaking.
a common bond
formed against the backdrop
of spiraling galaxies-
here
and
now
we revel in the release—
knowing
tomorrow the day will line us up again,
we will form our coveys
and bide our time until
we head back out into the night.
where everything will begin again.

A Better Place

skating
turning
halting
the crisp air against my cheeks
en-pointe
then
a vector forms from my toes to the sky,
a bird catches the arrowhead
of my pose
and carries it aloft
to new heights,
then rests on high cliffs.
I have achieved
a better place
because a little winged creature
flew by.
