I sing because the notes float in the air
and as I skip around
I reach up to pluck
the quarter-notes that hang like ripe fruit
in the rippled atmosphere
daring me to find
the tune they want to be
whispers hint
at the boldest measures
and I smile
suddenly knowing
the song.
